"Alchemy, Wizards & Potions" was a big hit on April 8th at the 2017 Big Cool Science Festival at Colorado College. Thousands turned out (our biggest crowd ever) and everyone had a great time as young science wizards performed their own amazing chemistry and levitations, explored our "castle" and crawled through a realistic cave simulator, just a few of the dozens of activities presented by Cool Science and other participating organizations. Kids even imagined themselves as real "Scientists at Work" with PPLD's green screen video (pics). We'll have a full photo gallery up soon, but in the meantime check our Facebook Event page for more pictures, videos and comments from our fans.
Our 4th Annual Cool Science Kid's Mini Fruitcake Toss is in the books, and the kids certainly did their part to rid the world of those leftover Christmas fruitcakes. Check out all the winners and some of the best decorated catapults on our Facebook page. Special thanks to the folks at Imagination Celebration for helping us host the event at their iSpace in the Citadel mall (and donating prizes). We also want to thank the rest of our prize sponsors: Little Richard's Toy Store; Go! Calendars, Toys & Games; the Space Foundation Discovery Center; Josh & John's Ice Cream; and the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
Congratulations to Summit Technical Solutions on their 15th anniversary! To celebrate the milestone they closed their Colorado Springs office on September 22nd and all of their employees pitched in to bring a very Cool Day of Science to the students at Will Rogers Elementary school . Engineers and business analysts alike teamed up with Cool Science to present 6 different demonstration shows (electricity, light & color, sound & waves; states of matter, super cold and rocket science), and to cap off the day everyone got to make their own cup of ice cream with liquid nitrogen. It was a blast for all! Find out how your company can also sponsor a Day of Science for a local school.
2016 was our busiest summer ever with programs all over eastern Colorado highlighted by the new "Sunday Science on the Street" series. For 19 Sundays from May through September we featured a variety of exciting hands-on science activities for kids of all ages right on the street in downtown Manitou Springs: giant soap bubbles; spouting and singing bowls; magnets; dry ice; chair of nails; mag-lev train; spinning stuff; water marbles; penny puzzles; screaming balloons; and of course our ice cream and Dippin' Dots with liquid nitrogen. It was a great summer- and look for us to do it again next year!
Cool Science was honored in 2012 by the El Pomar Foundation as the Charles L. Tutt Award for Excellence winner in Education. El Pomar's signature program, "Awards for Excellence" annually recognizes the state's highest performing nonprofit organizations, and this year's winners each received $25,000 grants. This is actually the second time that Cool Science has won this prestigious award (the first was in 2006), and we again thank the Foundation and it's trustees, as well as all of our volunteers who make everything that we do possible.
