Materials Needed:

• 1 clear glass

• 1 sheet of white paper

• Water

• A dark room

• Milk

• Flashlight

• Spoon

Get Started:

• Place the glass filled with water on the table.
• Turn out the lights in the room.
• Shine the flashlight through the class of water onto the sheet of paper.
• Slowly add a few drops of milk to the water and gently stir.
• Watch what happens to the light shining on the paper.

What does this mean?

• As the sun travels across the sky, its light has to travel greater and shorter distances to reach your eyes.
• When the sun is directly overhead at noon the light has the least amount of air to travel through.
• The sun at the horizon has the most amount of light to travel through. The milky water, like oxygen and nitrogen in the air scatter most of the colors so you mostly see orange-reds.
