Cost: $5/child for all of the day's events

 

Details on the Day:  Registration for the day will be between 9am and 10am. At the registration table, you'll pay $5 for each child (adults are free) and pick out the tickets for the sessions you plan to attend.  20 tickets are available per time slot per workshop. Demonstration shows have no limit on number of attendees.  Workshops begin on the hour, and end with enough time to find the next workshop room.

Lunch Break: You may either bring a sack lunch and eat it anywhere on campus, or food is available for purchase at The Lodge (UCCS Student Cafeteria), which is a 10 minute walk from the Science Auditorium.

 

Advance Registration: Unlike previous years, Cool Science will not be accepting advance registrations, tickets will be given out on a first come, first served basis, so come at 9am!

Workshop Details:

Workshop/Demo Description
Polymers (ages 5 and up) Ooey-gooey, make SLIME that you get to take home with you.  Be a super absorbent polymer detective, and when you find it, find out what super absorbent really means! 
Egg Drop (ages 5 and up) Can you build a creative structure out of common household clutter that will protect a raw egg falling off a second story ledge? Try it out!
Photography (ages 5 and up) You won't believe how easy it is to make a pinhole camera!  In this workshop, we use a pinhole camera to take a picture and then develop it - the results are surprising sometimes!  Take your photographic masterpiece with you!
Flinker (ages 5 and up)

Your mission is to build something that both FLoats and sINKS in water? Is it possible? Try it out!

Dry Ice (ages 5 and up) Dry Ice is VERY COOL stuff.  Really - it's minus 110 deg!  Find out more about this fascinating substance, and take home tips and trips to amaze your friends! (Safety note: to do this workshop you MUST bring thick winter gloves with you and be able to follow instructions well.  Dry Ice can burn you if you don't handle it the way we will instruct.)
Physics (ages 9 and up) There are two different physics workshops offered:

Catapult (morning) - can you build a catapult to launch something across the room?

Lasers and Mirrors (afternoon) - Use disco ball mirrors to change the path of laser light all over the room and eventually hit a target!

Microscopic Biology! (ages 5 and up) Use a microscope to see all sorts of interesting biological phenomena!  There may also be some eyeballs, hearts, lungs, etc. to look at.  Stay tuned (brought to you by UCCS Beta Beta Beta Biological Society!)
Demonstration Show (ages 0 and up) There are two different demonstration shows offered.  You'll see Cool Science doing a demonstration show normally only done in schools!

GPS Hunt Joint a treasure hunt all over the UCCS campus using Global Positioning System.

FAQ:

 

Q: What if my child has something in the morning (or afternoon).

A: That's fine, the charge is $5 to attend as many workshops as one child can in a day.

 

Q: Can my child bring a friend?

A: Yes!  Many of the workshops will be more fun when working in a team.
